The Oracle white paper "Enterprise Single Sign-On: The Missing Link in Password Management" argues cogently for the implementation of Oracle Enterprise Single Sign-On, noting that the solution can reduce the number of application passwords users require for access; automate the process of password entry; and securely store user credentials for every application in a central repository where they can easily be managed and from which they can be recovered. One key cost factor cited is the reduction of help desk costs associated with password support, even as security is increased by the enforcement of strong password standards.

That exception involves the default ZFS root file system which currently does not allow /var to be mounted as a separate filesystem as required by one of the STIG items. Laurent has notified Solaris Engineering of this fact. He cautions that his investigation is altogether unofficial has is not sanctioned by either Oracle or DISA.

Most of the open source projects that came through Oracle's door with Sun are still vital and ongoing, Cassia writes, noting the apparent exception of OpenSolaris.

Release of the new Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.0 extension packs have raised questions in the minds of some users that Wim Coekaerts seeks to put to rest in his blog on the subject. Prior to 4.0, he explains, there were two versions a user could download. Oracle has simplified the process by separating the two out and enabling installation through the "extension pack." The two classes of license are still available (commercial and PUEL). The result, Coekaerts contends, is a more flexible structure for installing VirtualBox and its drivers and one that allows for more modular additions as well.

Certainly in the case involving the supposed holdings of the Computer History Museum, without redundancy and YouTube, the "Sun Microsystems Founders Panel" (Bill Joy, Andy Bechtolsheim, Vinod Khosla, Scott McNealy and moderator John Gage) would have vanished forever since the video disappeared mysteriously from the museum's web site during the confusion around the reorganization reflecting Oracle's acquisition of Sun.
